Jinky’s happened as a sort of accident this morning – we were actually cruising along Ventura brainstorming lunch ideas, when Friand decided to turn around in the Jinky’s parking lot. The consensus was that Jinky’s would be so busy that we had no hope of eating there, but miracle of all miracles there was a parking space! Sure, but… a table? No way. We’re going to be waiting for a long time! NOPE! We were shown right to a table – though it may have been one of the only empty tables availble.
Unfortunately, the Jinky’s website is one big Adobe flash player creation, so I can’t link directly to the menu! But, there were several vegetarian sandwiches which could easily been turned vegan:
HEALTHY GARDEN provolone cheese, tomato, lettuce, alfa sprouts, cucumbers, onion, and sweet pea guacamole on wheat bread
PORTABELLO MUSHROOM SANDWICH portabello mushroom, spinach & mozzarella cheese
GARDEN BURGER a vegetarian delight! – veggie patty, with lettuce, tomato & onions served on a whole wheat bun
But then… I saw it:
VIVA LAS VEGAN (no eggs) tofu, wild rice, black beans, zucchini, mushrooms, red & yellow bell peppers, onions, and garlic-chili sauce
Seriously? It was like the mothership calling me home…
I have to admit, I have never (repeat: never) eaten a vegan scramble before. I’ve heard tales of these mystical creations, but I have not actually eaten one! And the verdict? It’s a winner! The al dente wild rice coupled with the creamy tofu cubes, black beans (and I swear there were kernels of corn in this even though it’s not listed on the menu) and tangy garlic-chili sauce, made my taste buds swoon! I love spicey food, and I can tolerate pretty fiery hot sauces, so sometimes I’m not a reliable source. On my own personal heat-o-meter, I’d call this a “medium” although Friand said it was very hot! Let’s just say if you like spicey, you’ll like this, and if you don’t… well, you may have to ask for an alternative sauce or order one of the sandwiches instead.
I paired my Viva Las Vegan with rye toast & Jinky’s potatoes. The toast with strawberry jam certainly helped to cool my mouth after all those spices!
Discovering Jinky’s today was an almost-accident that I’m glad to have been a part of!
