I’m always astounded by the amazing things happening right in my own backyard, here in Los Angeles. It’s easy to get caught up in my own hectic life, but I count myself lucky to be able to take advantage of the many privileges my position allows whenever I want/need something. I try not to forget that there are people who cannot just waltz in to a fancy Whole Foods and pick up expensive organic broccoli on a Tuesday just because they want some. For many people who live in food deserts, options are limited, and healthy, fresh choices are not always easy to come by.
A great organization called “Feed and Be Fed” has popped up in South LA, with the help of my friend, parent to two of my talented music students, and all around great person Jana Carter.
She writes:
“One of the ways I’ve been directing my energy has been toward this lovely little garden turned urban farm I am helping to build and grow in south Los Angeles. It is a safe space in the streets of Los Angeles where people come and find sanctuary. It is also a farm where anyone can come and help, turn compost, pull weeds, plant seeds, and harvest, serve, and eat real, healthy food. We serve a small community of housed and unhoused (homeless) neighbors in San Pedro who are getting to know one another, building relationships, and serving one another, all while growing food that anyone present can enjoy.”
From the Feed and Be Fed website:
“Here at Feed & Be Fed, we are committed to feeding in body, mind, and spirit.
As a private, non-profit organization we believe that all people have something they are hungry for and something with which they can feed those around them.
Explore our website to learn more about all that we are doing to create a place where all are welcome to feed and be fed.”
Please consider making a donation to Feed and Be Fed, to help them keep this thing moving!! https://www.razoo.com/story/G4deqf
Sharing a space with The Garden Church, Feed and Be Fed serves the community with the Urban Farm, Urban Sanctuary, and Living Classroom.

From 1-4pm we will have exhibits and presenters sharing on all kinds of topics relating to ecological stewardship, eco-friendly gardening, garden crafts, and more. Plus enjoy harvesting directly from the garden at our U-Pick Farm Stand.
For our Interfaith worship service leaders from a variety of faith backgrounds will join together to thank God for the gifts of this earthly home we share through special music, readings, and prayers.
And we will end with a Community Potluck Meal that will surely be a feast for the senses as we ask that folks bring a dish to share that represents your cultural heritage or your favorite corner of the earth. What will you bring to the table?
